The Quiet Adventures of Banja Luka Come to whl.travel

Tucked away in a quiet northwest corner of Bosnia-Herzegovina lies one of the last untouched natural ecosystems in Europe. While that sounds like something many tour companies say these days about their own homes, you would be hard pressed to find more unspoiled countryside than that around Banja Luka, where lack of easy access and limited infrastructure once halted the usual tourist swell to this region. Nowadays, though, under the careful guidance of Zepter Passport, the new whl.travel local connection in this part of the world, Banja Luka is now opening up a little.

Fortunately deeply dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Zepter Passport has taken careful steps to make sure that human impact is minimal in Banja Luka. In some ways, this has been helped by the company’s relative youth, which means that it doesn’t have many bad habits to work against. It can really help steer Banja Luka on a greener path toward the future.

Travellers to Banja Luka therefore suffer only an embarrassment of riches, deciding between the incredible variety of exciting things to see and do. While Banja Luka city has its share of clubs and bars, old fortresses, presidential palaces, funky cafes, oh-so-hip student eateries and stunning locals (it’s reputed to be home of some of the world’s most beautiful women), visiting the outlying region is perfect for what some might call ‘quiet adventure.’

The area surrounding Banja Luka includes lush forests in which there is a smattering of tiny villages and more wildlife than people. Feeding all this verdure, though, is a complex river system that is teeming with fish and other aquatic creatures, and arguably the main draw of this tiny pocket of the world.

]]>

+ The Pliva River, known for its spectacular multicoloured waters and large grayling fish, attracts fly-fishers from all over the globe.

+ The Una River was given its name, meaning the ‘only one,’ by Roman explorers. This intricate system of waterfalls, rapids and calm waters shelters unique species of fish and plants.

+ The Unac River brims with rainbow and brown trout. This mountain river is famous for its twilight activity, when the majority of its fish and flowers spring to life.

+ The Ribnik is the wildest river in the Banja Luka region and home to the largest grayling in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Snag one of these cunning fish and claim the ultimate trophy.

+ The Sanica is a tiny tributary of the larger Sana River, but it makes up for its size with the sheer weight of its fish population: 70 percent of the region’s grayling population can be found here, while the rest is brown trout.

+ The Krusnica River’s waters are diamond clear, sourced from a nearby mountain spring that is absolutely pure (don’t be timid about drinking from these waters). Near Banja Luka, the spring reaches a depth of nearly 120 meters, allowing for a wider variance of wildlife and larger fish.

+ The Neretva River has one of the richest instances of soil erosion in the Balkans due to seven nearby mountain peaks and a vast tangle of tributaries. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful fly-fishing spots in the world and is said to have the most copious flow of any waterway draining into the Adriatic Sea. A wide variety of fish flourish in the Neretva, from brown and marble trout to grayling, softmouth and lat.

With such a rich complex of rivers, Banja Luka draws back angling enthusiasts year after year, especially fly-fishers. Fly-fishing entails multiple casts of an artificial insect or ‘fly’ using a nearly weightless fishing line. It’s a practice that requires significant deliberation and skill and has consequently often been dubbed ‘the contemplative man’s recreation.’

Fly-fishing tours led by Zepter Passport are strictly catch-and-release only. Barbless hooks are mandatory, making their removal easy after a trophy photo is taken so that the fish can be released back, unharmed, into the water.

For non-anglers and anyone else taking a break from the rivers, the surrounding landscape offers a great mix of activities. Traverse the Kozara mountain system and look out over the entire western half of Bosnia; raft down the Vrbas River, one of Europe’s best and the site of the World Rafting Championship in 2009; or, for a piece of Banja Luka’s cultural history, explore the country’s rich ethnic and religious history by foot and visit the numerous monasteries dotting the countryside.

Banja Luka’s weather draws visitors year round to the city and the region’s main draw – the vast, wild countryside of Bosnia-Herzegovina. In support of this, a wide variety of Banja Luka hotels is available, both in and outside the city, from budget to luxurious.

Though the term ‘getting away from it all’ has been overused, Banja Luka, while hardly remote, is admirable in its ability to live up to its promises. For example, any map of Banja Luka reveals a sense of a city so isolated yet so close to Europe’s hotspots that it is serviced by most European airports. Fortunately, the few local travel companies operating in Banja Luke have made sincere efforts to protect the natural beauty.

www.banja-luka-hotels.com is the latest Bosnia-Herzegovina destination to join the whl.travel network, following Medjugorje and Sarajevo.

Arrive at Your Hotel Looking Like A Million Dollars

It’s a rare place and person for whom first impressions do not count at all – most human beings are after all just human, and have judged each other before they’ve even exchanged a word. It’s the primitive in all of us, and we’re all subconsciously eyeing up potential mates. Most people have a desire to look presentable and attractive, but let’s face it, there’s always a few instances where even the best-dressed and well-groomed can look less than their best.

These everyday ‘grunge scenarios’ may ring some bells:

You’ve had a sleepless night and it’s all you can do to stumble into the office. Will anyone notice the dark circles, bed hair and odd-socks?

You’ve stepped out of the plane after a long-haul flight – your seat didn’t recline, the movie channels went on the blink and it’s been a flying kindergarten. You’re officially a zombie and you still have the immigration gauntlet to go (you’re in LAX).

Your children have been up all night, you’re exhausted but still have to do the early school run. Will anyone notice the breakfast cereal on your top, the baby snail trails on your shoulder and those odd socks?

You’ve been camping. You have had no access to a hot shower or a hairdryer – you’ve going ‘au naturel’. However, supplies are low and you have to visit civilisation to shop. Wouldn’t it be nice to do it without security tailing you?

Now come on, be honest. You’re not going to tell me that these scenarios are just some of my experiences, are you? However, out of all of these, the times that irk me the most are those when people in the hospitality industry – people who are paid to give me a welcome – so they really should, make me feel uncomfortable because my ‘game face’ was having an away day. Anyone stumbling into a hotel after a long day and night (or after any of the above scenarios) will look less than Gisele Bundchen (unless she’s Gisele Bundchen).

]]>

It did my soul some good recently to read about a couple who rocked up to a smart city centre hotel in Auckland recently. They’d been travelling around New Zealand in a campervan, but despite their backpacker grunge, received a genuinely warm welcome from the Kiwis at the hotel. To quote, “We’d just sold our campervan, it was raining hard and we turned up with an awful lot of stuff at the door of the hotel. We looked a bit grubby. I only provide this background because it would have been very easy for the hotel staff to have been a little sniffy with us. But here’s the thing – they weren’t.”

Whilst it’s great to see that hospitality is live and well in this particular Auckland hotel, you may not always be so lucky. So if you’re travelling and want a similar style welcome on arrival, make sure you:

Check out your accommodation or hotel website

Read any reviews or testimonials

Follow up recommendations from friends and family

Fix your face fast (see below for quick and easy tips).

Meanwhile, for all of us who want to rejuvenate well-worn, well-loved and well-travelled faces and figures, here are my favorite quick, simple and easy fixes.

Carry handy wet wipes with you everywhere – in pockets, handbags, nappy bags – these can wash your face, wipe off any spills and wake you up.

Drink as much water as you can and limit the caffeine intake.

If you’re on a long flight, moisturise your skin before you fly, drink as much water as you can, keep your hair simple, stay make-up free and try to rest (if not sleep).

Never, never put socks in the drawer unless they’re part of a pair.

Vacation in New Zealand – you’ll find that appearances really don’t matter much to the Kiwi locals – they’re unpretentious, genuinely friendly and almost always ready to go the extra mile to ensure visitors’ vacations in New Zealand are fun, relaxing and revitalising.

How to Travel Safely

No matter where you go or where your trip takes you there is and always will be a need for safety tips and rules. So to travel safely while on your city break you should use some if not all of the following tips:

Know Your Area

It doesn’t matter if you are in Rome or Greece you need to have a good idea of the town’s layout and important features. Some of the important places to know are where you are staying, where the local hospital is, where the police are located and at least one apothecary. Now this may seem hard, but if you have a map and mark them on it then find the center most location you have a start. Once you know what the center of town is find something unique or that will stand out, even a local business will work. Now that you know spot you chose and its local name you will be able to start back there time and time again, and by knowing which important item is in which direction you can get help when needed.

]]>

Keep Your Valuables Locked Up

Do not carry everything with you when you travel and what you do carry ensure it. Once you get to your destination many of the local banks and hotels have safety boxes you can rent and store your personal valuables in. You can also keep most of your belongings in your room as well, only place items that cannot be replaced in the safes.

Dress Accordingly

While you are out and about notice how others are dressed and try for the same casual look. Not only will you be able to blend in more and make targeting tourist harder but also you can experience the local country so much more.

Medical Needs

Keep all medicines with you at all times with extra locked away safely, have a list of instructions incase something does happen and make sure to have a list of phone numbers as well. By caring medicine in its prescribed bottle with you, if something happens the local doctor will already know some about you and how to treat you. Also having at the hotel helps to ensure you have a supply if you need it. When preparing for your trip you need to tell your doctor where you are going and for how long also that you want two bottles for your medicines one to carry and one to store.

Being safe and keeping safe while traveling in different countries is no different that when you are traveling to another state. By being prepared and paying attention to what is around you, you will find yourself having a better and healthier time abroad.

Safe Travel in Mexico

When talking to people about going to Tijuana for dental work, more and more the question arises, “Is it really safe to go to Mexico?” My answer is always YES! I feel quite at home in Tijuana, but like anywhere, you have to use common sense while traveling in Mexico.

I can understand the apprehension that some people have as they contemplate going into another country, where everything is strange and unknown. Then when you hear bad things on the news, it can make it even more frightening. While the decision of whether or not to cross South of the border into Tijuana is the responsibility of each individual, I would like to answer a few questions to try to put things into perspective, as well as give a few tips on how to travel more safely in Mexico, or any foreign country, or even into any Metropolitan down town area of the USA.

Click here to see a youtube testimony about safety in Tijuana

To answer the question, “Is it dangerous in Mexico?” Not if you use common sense! The folks at Sam Dental Tijuana were very helpful to me. Here is what I have learned from them, and after several trips, I can say that yes, I feel safe!

Don’t be fearful when you hear negative reports on the news. Keep in perspective that the news agencies look for any incident that will grab headlines. The problem is that news reports often give an exaggerated view and can distort reality. Not to dismiss out of hand the reports one hears, because we always need to be careful and vigilant, but the truth is there are a lot of incidents that happen everyday in certain parts of every large US city that never gets reported because they are so common. Everyday in San Diego and Los Angeles, or New York, or Miami, or Denver, or Dallas, or in Washington D.C., it is common for someone to get mugged or robbed, or found dumped in an alley, so common that it doesn’t grab the attention of the news hounds anymore. So what I am trying to say is that yes, you need to be careful while traveling in Mexico, or Tijuana, but also you need to be careful walking in downtown L.A., or San Diego. Don’t let rumors or news reports, that are attempting to grab headlines by focusing attention on bad things, exaggerate the dangers and frighten you. Just be cautious, and you’ll be alright. Remember, literally 100’s of thousands of people cross over into Tijuana from the USA every month without incident.

]]>

I have traveled into Mexico dozens and dozens of times. I have been very often to Tijuana, Juarez, Reynosa, and other border towns. I have also been in many Latin American countries, and have lived for several years in South America. I have NEVER had an incident where I felt in danger. However, I used to live in Denver working for the cable company, and have been threatened with bodily injury and have felt very intimidated on several occasions. I even had to call the police in order to complete my work in someone’s back yard because they had threatened to shoot me when I went to shut their cable off!! I feel safer in Mexico, than in certain areas of Denver. And what is Denver compared to L.A.? Or Washington D.C., or Miami?

Tips for Safe Travel.

1. Be discrete. Never flash a lot of money. Keep the majority of your cash hidden in a front pocket that you can zip or button down. Just keep a limited amount of cash in your wallet. Also keep your passport, drivers license, and credit card hidden in another front pocket. It would be good to keep those documents together with a rubber band or a money clip. Also, don’t bring all your credit cards with you, just bring one or two, that way if you loose it, you will know which one to report lost.

2. Walk over and take a Taxi rather than drive over. Unless you are planning to stay for several days, and would like to site see, it takes a lot of stress off to not to have to keep an eye on your car, or to have to maneuver in Mexico traffic. I always hate been stuck in the long line to cross back into the USA. It is liberating to just leave the car parked in the USA and let a taxi take you to your dental appointment. If you do drive over, NEVER leave valuables, like your camera or purse, in plain site in the car seat. If you do, you might be inviting a break in. That is not just true in Mexico! Also, if you drive in, make sure you keep your vehicle locked, and ALWAYS put a manual locking device, like the “Club”, on your steering wheel. At Sam Dental in Tijuana, they have off street parking that is secure, but it is still a good idea to use a locking device.

3. Keep your night life to a minimum If you are concerned about safety, remember that not only in Tijuana, but in L.A. as well, most crimes are committed late at night. Common sense is a must!

I enjoy traveling in Mexico, and I love the atmosphere and culture. Aside from the tremendous savings I have experienced getting dental and medical procedures done, I have love it in Mexico, and I plan on retiring there in a few years. I feel that it is safe to go to Tijuana. But, the truth is, just like in any large metropolis in the USA, it pays to be cautious and vigilant. You will have a good experience, just like the 10’s of thousands of people who cross the border every day without incident. Don’t be fearful, just keep your eyes open, and you’ll be fine.

Vaccinations for Travel

It is an amazing experience to travel overseas to see many beautiful and unique sights of another country and absorb its culture, but one thing you don’t want any part of are the diseases such as yellow fever and malaria that many countries are plagued with. Travel vaccinations will take care of this problem, but you must be sure to get the right travel vaccinations for the country you are visiting.

Information about vaccinations for travel can be found on many websites or your travel doctor will be able to advise you on what vaccinations for travel you will need. Malaria prevention can only be successful with the correct vaccinations done at the right time to gain maximum protection during your trip. Since malaria stays in the body and you can get it over and over once you contract the disease, you really don’t want to take the risk of getting it the first time.

Many countries do not have the same protection such as flyscreens in their accommodation that are enjoyed in Australia. Therefore it is most likely that you will get bitten by mosquitoes carrying the malaria disease, even if you take other precautions such as wearing long-sleeved shirts and spraying with insect repellent. The malaria mosquitoes are rather more aggressive than other kinds of mozzies, so will often bite through clothing and repellent.

Yellow Fever vaccination will give you peace of mind that you will not contract that debilitating disease and have your holiday spoiled by illness. The trouble is with such diseases that you can often bring it back with you and infect others, not to mention suffering from it yourself.

Good health care may not be available in the very countries where you are most likely to get the disease, so you do not want to take the risk. Some vaccinations need to be done several weeks before you leave for them to have the greatest effect, so don’t leave it too late.
